Yaotome

Yaotome

八乙女

Yaotome is the Japanese word for "8 maidens." Yaotome refers to the eight ladies who helped Prince Hachiko (Dewa Sanzan's founder, according to the main legends) reach Mt. Haguro. Two of the eight ladies mainly took good care of Prince Hachiko by feeding him local fish and shellfish and hosting him in a cave in Yura. You can find a statue of the two ladies: "Miô" and "Ehime" near the beach. Yaotome incarnates this tradition of hospitality to travelers by serving seafood. The food in Yaotome relies on fresh fish cut into sashimi and grilled fish and shellfish. Its outdoor baths are modeled after ancient Rome's thermae.
